The attack on France: The European Union’s misjudgement

The events of the sad attack on France is due to many complicated variables. However it could have been easily prevented if it wasn’t for the European Union’s poor misjudgement. Let me explain why.

The European Union refused to listen to Tony Abbott (at the time Australia PM), he sent naval gunboats to turn back asylum seekers before they reached Australia – he said that the EU should ‘urgently’ follow his lead. He also said: ‘The only way you can stop the deaths is to stop the boats. ‘That’s why it is so urgent that the countries of Europe adopt very strong policies that will end the people-smuggling trade across the Mediterranean.’ – Instead the German government welcomed economic migrants to put their own lives at risk to travel to the west, why? “Germany believes the refugees’ (who are actually economic migrants) skills and talents could give a boost to the economy and help fill growing labour shortages in the country”.

Due to the lack of border controls across the European Union, this allowed migrants to travel freely across Europe. This is not safe! Letting 100,000’s of people in without any checks and we do not know what their intentions are. The Syrian operative claimed that more than 4,000 covert ISIS gunmen had been smuggled into western nations – hidden amongst innocent refugees.

What needs to be done? Turn back future boats and secure the borders around Europe letting each member state of the European Union retain control of their own borders. Refugees must claim asylum in their first safe country that they enter and follow the 1967 United Nations Asylum Convention. It states:

“A person who owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it..”  -(Article 1).

The United Kingdom should carry on accepting legitimate refugees that have gone through the correct channels of applying for asylum and have not travelled across Europe.

However what will happen? I feel that the European Union will use the attack on France to call for a greater Union and call upon an EU Army. This is far from what actually is needed. It is due to the European Union’s foreign policy and open borders that have got us into this mess (as explained above). A strong but fair border controls between each member state will stop the mass flow of economic migrants across Europe. This is impossible due to the EU freedom of movement law, therefore each member state needs to seek exit of the EU to regain its sovereignty. Also the thought of an EU Army that is dictated by an expansionist European Union is scary and will be a threat to peace. We should not allow this to happen.
